The Region
Step outside and you're already there. Southwest Oklahoma isn't a place you pass through β it's a place that stops you in your tracks. Ancient granite rises from open prairie. Bison graze along the roadside like they own the place (they do). And just down the mountain, one of Oklahoma's most beloved historic towns has been charming visitors since 1908. Here's what's waiting for you.
Nearly 60,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie and ancient granite peaks managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service β and your backyard. Wake up, grab your coffee, and drive five minutes to watch a herd of American bison crossing the road like rush hour traffic, except far more majestic. Texas longhorn cattle, Rocky Mountain elk, white-tailed deer, river otters, beavers, and the irresistible prairie dog towns all share this wild landscape that looks more like a movie set than a real place.
Hikers can tackle over 22 miles of trails ranging from easy nature walks to serious granite scrambles. Rock climbers and rappellers have their pick of dramatic faces. The 8,570 acres of Charon's Garden Wilderness Area rewards those willing to earn the solitude β permits required, crowds nonexistent. Kayakers and anglers head to the lakes and creeks that wind through the refuge. And the Quanah Parker Nature & Visitor Center tells the full story of this remarkable place through exhibits, wildlife tours, and films.
The Parallel Forest β rows of cedar trees planted exactly six feet apart in the early 1900s, stretching to the horizon β is one of those places you have to see to believe. So is the Forty-Foot Hole, a gorge near Lost Lake where Cache Creek tumbles over ancient rock into a series of hidden waterfalls. The Holy City of the Wichitas hosts the annual Easter Pageant, one of the longest-running outdoor dramas in the country.
Founded in 1908 by John William Elmer Thomas β a man who fell so completely in love with this cobblestone-studded valley that he bought it and built a resort β Medicine Park is Oklahoma's original escape. More than a century later, it still feels like a secret. Tucked into the foothills of the Wichita Mountains along Medicine Creek, this tiny, cobblestone village has survived wars, floods, and decades of changing tastes to emerge as one of the most charming day-trip destinations in the state.
At the heart of it all is Bath Lake, formed in the 1920s as the town's communal swimming hole. Waterfall-fed and crystal clear, it's the kind of place that makes you feel like you've stumbled into a painting. Swim, wade, fish for trout in the winter, or simply sit on the shore and let the sound of falling water do its work. Surrounding the lake, local shops offer handmade art, antiques, and one-of-a-kind finds. The restaurants and bars pour cold drinks and serve up good food with porches that face the mountains.
Lake Lawtonka sits just east of town β over two square miles of open water with 20 miles of shoreline, marina access, boat launches, fishing docks, and overnight camping. It holds the Oklahoma record for the largest smallmouth bass ever caught. The Medicine Park Music Hall hosts live music year-round, and the town's festival calendar fills up fast with events that draw people from across the state. This is the kind of town where you stop for lunch and realize three hours have passed.
